a friend from the forest, and six mornings of coffee

tomodachi (友達) means friend. mori (森) means forest. Put one inside the other and you get to(mori)dachi: the friend you meet in the woods.

Ours is kumamori, the little bear who lives among the trees, and the odd rabbit who wanders through. Each one is thrown and glazed by hand at Sen by Prodigal, our pottery studio down the corridor from the roastery. Speckled clay, pooling greens, a bear drawn on with a steady hand and no stencil.

Which one comes home with you is up to the forest.

What's inside

1 × blind box vessel, either a cup or a pourer, chosen at random. We made an even number of each, so it's a straight 50/50. Every piece is wheel-thrown and hand-painted, so no two are alike: different motif, different glaze break, different little imperfections. Food safe, dishwasher friendly, made to be used every day rather than kept on a shelf.

6 × assorted drip bags, a rotating selection from our current single origins, freshly roasted and sealed right after grinding. Recent line-up includes:

• Bolivia CLP Pacamara: apricot, mugicha, caramel
• Kenya Mung'aria: bright, juicy, unmistakably Kenyan

How to brew

Tear, hook the bag over your cup, pour. Each bag holds 10g of coffee, so use 150g to 180g of water at 88°C to 96°C. Bloom for 20 to 30 seconds, then pour in slow circles until you hit your volume. No grinder, no scale, no machine.

Want it iced? Set the bag over a cup of ice and brew straight onto it with less water. Flash-brewed filter coffee, one minute flat.

Good to know

• Only 20 sets exist. Once they're gone, they're gone.
• Blind box means blind box. Cup or pourer is a 50/50 draw, and we can't take requests or swaps.
• Handmade pottery varies in size, weight, glaze and drawing. That's the point, not a defect.
• Drip bags are best within 3 months of roast. Keep them cool, dry and out of the sun.
